I checked the device IDs, and sure enough, the scanner in my tablet was included as well. Curious… it stores the whole installation package in a DLL file. Huh? So I dug into my new DV and found out where Windows Update saved the downloaded driver. But the TrueSuite software wasn’t offered. The software, TrueSuite Starter, is dead simple. Quick to reject a fingerprint but slow to reset/retry, slow to log in, slow to open. It was HP ProtectTools suite that I had on my tablet, and it SUCKED. The software I’d used in the past for fingerprint login is slow, clunky, and WAY overfeatured for just wanting to use it to log in and geek out friends.

Sure enough, 3 results for fingerprint software already installed. But I tried it anyway… I clicked Start and entered “finger”.

Somehow, Windows Update picked up the driver for it… “ooh wow, a driver, I’m so lucky”, I thought (sarcastically). I’d recently picked up a DV6000 laptop with a fingerprint swipe. It’d sure be nice if the OEMs actually lived up to that fairy tale…

I'd say it has less feats (much like the Authentec "Starter" software) but since I always used only the fingerprint for login, I wouldn't know for sure.Īlso I still wasn't able to move my installation to UEFI (my mistake installing under BIOS, stupid, stupid) so I wasn't able to try the secure boot feat. So, Authentec thinks it’s cute to say that they only provide software through OEMs. Regarding the fingerprint software, is just the same as it was in W7, tough a little faster. The new Synaptics Ultranav Driver is still buggy (charms and gestures work, but two and three fingers click doesn't). System Update doesn't work: the packages are not being listed, no matter they are available. It was supposed to be a Metro app, so they might be releasing it at the end of the month. Also some feats are still missing: Dolby (doesn't work in W8 at all) and HDD Accelerator (W7 version can be used), for example. They started to pop up on October the 2nd. But they are still incomplete: The Settings Dependency package is available, but the new Settings Control Panel or however they call it is not available yet.
